The Limestone Family YMCA traces it origin to a concerned group of citizens who in 1984 met to discuss ways to improve the quality of life in the community. The group concluded that there was no single place where an entire family could gather to engage in wholesome activity that would interest all of the family members.
Following authorized surveys by YMCA national field consultants, volunteers were sought, start-up funding secured, not-for-profit status was granted, and by 1986 the Limestone Family YMCA was formally granted a charter from the YMCA of the USA. What followed was the difficult take of raising the money to make the Limestone Family YMCA a reality. A volunteer effort raised more that $3 million, in 1988 the doors were opened, and the facility was fully functional.
In the summer of 2000, a feasibility study was conducted assess the possibility of an expansion project. In September 2002 the Y broke ground on a $1.2 million dollar expansion and renovation project. The Y took full occupancy of the newly renovated facility in July 2003. Now we have a new cardio and strength center, aerobics studio, mini gym, expanded child care, and an impressive new entrance to our facility. Thanks to the generosity of this community, the Limestone Family YMCA had grown beyond anyone’s expectations.
